What You Need To Know About Nutritional Yeast

If you're eating a plant-based diet or do any shopping in health food stores, you've probably heard of nutritional yeast. It's a popular ingredient used in vegan dishes both for its nutritional value and earthy flavor.

Nutritional yeast is a dehydrated yeast product that's usually cultured on the surface of molasses. The yeast is harvested, washed, and then heated to dry. Finally, it's crumbled or ground into powder and packaged.

Though popularly cultured on molasses, there's no sugar in nutritional yeast. It's gluten-free, soy-free and low in fat.

Since nutritional yeast is deactivated, it doesn't have the leavening power of active yeast. It’s used primarily as a flavoring agent, not one that will produce a reaction like proofing flour or turning hops and water into beer.

It has a rich, nutty flavor which many vegans and vegetarians use to mimic the savory taste of cheese. It’s also one of the few plant sources of B vitamins. Just one tablespoon delivers six times the B12 you need to meet your day’s recommended amount.

Nutritional yeast is sometimes categorized as a superfood because just one tablespoon provides protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

This product isn't for everyone, it's not recommended for folks with IBS and some autoimmune diseases. Like many good things - use in moderation, listen to your body and ask your doctor if you're not sure if this product is for you.

We love using nutritional yeast in our cheese-substitute recipes like spicy queso cheese dip and vegan grated Parmesan. It can also be used as a sprinkle on top of popcorn or roasted veggies. It’s delicious on pasta, risotto and soups.
